Is it possible to write an article without mentioning the news? I thought that is would be a good idea to write an article about the effect of quarantine and the crisis on social media. Have you noticed that since the beginning of the quarantine, you spend more time on social media? We have. That’s way we wanted to analyze why people spend more time per day on social media.
As my colleague Nin’ very well explained on her article, https://ninonbarou-laforie.wixsite.com/thesociologs/post/we-all-hate-on-each-other-too-easily, Social media became a way to easily occupy one’s days. There are even more solidarity and very cool things / account since the quarantine has begun.
But our subject of the day is more based on what does people changed and why do they us more social media?
To begin, we can say that thanks to studies that the use of social networks increases by 61% since the beginning of the quarantine.
Based on Omedia’s studies, internet traffic already increased by 70% which is huge.
Because of the quarantine, four sectors are positively impacted:
- Internet traffic
- Video streaming (Netflix, YouTube, Disney+)
- Online shopping
And the last one which interest us the most in this article:
- Social network
But what are the social network that increased their traffic the most? The first one in WhatsApp. In brief, a lot of social media such as WhatsApp increased because people want to call their family, or they have dinner in front of their camera with their family and friends. But also, because we are facing a crisis, it is probably on Twitter that Internet users prefer to stay informed during the crisis we are going through. That’s why the traffic increased a lot and that there is even more new account created. Its numbers of daily active user’s sky rocked by 23%.

Indeed, I've also noticed that since quarantine people have become much more productive on social media. You just have to look at the number of people who got into tiktok for example!
